LINCOLN, Maine — A faulty vehicle exhaust may be the blame for a series of roadside fires that temporarily closed a busy section of West Broadway Wednesday afternoon into early evening. The fires, fueled by scorching heat and dry vegetation, prompted a large-scale emergency response from Lincoln firefighters, mutual aid departments, and state agencies.

The closure affected both directions of West Broadway between Aunnie Ashley’s Ice and Folsom Concrete, where thick smoke blanketed the area and visibility dropped sharply. The road was reopened later in the day once crews had fully contained the flames.

Eyewitness: Sparks and Flames from Pickup’s Exhaust

A Lincoln town official told DavesPaper.com | Lincoln Edition that initial reports indicate the fires were ignited by a faulty catalytic converter or malfunctioning exhaust system on a passing vehicle.

One resident on West Broadway said she witnessed the moment sparks began to fly.

“I saw a pickup go by with fire and sparks coming out of its exhaust,” she recalled. “Not long after, I saw smoke starting to rise from the roadside brush.”

Officials say the malfunction may have caused multiple spot fires along the road, each requiring quick attention to prevent them from spreading into the surrounding forest.

Fast-Moving Flames in Dangerous Conditions

The fires broke out during one of the hottest days of the season, with temperatures climbing well above average and humidity levels at a dangerous low. Dry roadside grass and pine needles provided ample fuel, allowing the flames to move quickly until firefighters arrived.

Lincoln Fire Department crews were joined by neighboring town departments, Maine State Police, and Maine Forest Rangers. Brush trucks, tankers, and pumpers lined the roadway as responders worked to douse flames and monitor for flare-ups. Police secured the closure area to protect both emergency crews and the public.

Mutual Aid Makes the Difference

In a public statement after the fire was contained, Lincoln Fire Department leaders praised the cooperation that made the response possible.

“We want to recognize the incredible effort of our fire personnel, who worked tirelessly today in the intense heat and dry conditions,” the department said. “Thank you as well to the crews from surrounding towns who stepped in to help, and to the Maine State Police and Maine Forest Rangers for your valuable assistance.”

Their coordinated work prevented the fire from reaching nearby homes and businesses. No injuries or significant property damage have been reported.

Community Thanks and Fire Safety Reminders

By evening, West Broadway was once again open to traffic, and community members took to social media to thank first responders. Many posts noted the long hours crews put in despite the heat and heavy smoke.

This is an ongoing story. DavesPaper.com | Lincoln Edition will update readers as new details are confirmed.

  1. This truck was shooting sludge that was lit, not sparks or faulty exhaust. When he opened up (giving the truck throttle) it shot out chunks that were on fire, landing every other foot the whole way from beside folsom to past Ashley’s ice cream. The truck needs to be found. Its caused by an emission failure. Engine not burning up the fuel in its carburetor and all the junk in the motor becoming a torch. As you’ll see, the fires started when ever the man was in the passing side headed toward lincoln
